FRANÇOIS RECANATI Linguistics.—Linguistic types and tokens do not have the same status, since types pertain to language (competence) and tokens pertain to discourse (performance) (→COMPETENCE/PERFORMANCE, DISCOURSE, LANGUAGE). The distinction between type and token can be studied at three levels of linguistic description.
