ABSTRACT

Note that we have tried to separate data management and information management. That is, data management focuses on database systems technologies such as query processing, transaction management, and storage management. Information management is much broader than data management and we have included many topics in this category such as knowledge management and information retrieval. The organization of this chapter is as follows. Information retrieval is discussed in Section 4.2. Multimedia information management is the subject of Section 4.3. Digital libraries are discussed in Section 4.4. Knowledge management is discussed in Section 4.5. Collaboration is the subject of Section 4.6. E-commerce technologies are discussed in Section 4.7. The semantic Web and related technologies are discussed in Section 4.8. Wireless and sensor information management is the subject of Section 4.9. Real-time information management as well as quality-of-service issues are the subjects of Section 4.10.
