ABSTRACT

During the early 1990s we conducted research on multilevel secure distributed database systems. In this chapter we provide an overview of the essential concepts. A MultiLevel Secure Distributed DataBase System (MLS/DDBMS) includes a multilevel distributed database. Each multilevel database is managed by a MLS/DBMS and connected through what we have called a Secure Distributed Processor (SDP). We describe the architecture in more detail in Section 16.3. In our investigation we have designed and implemented a MLS/DDBMS that connects multiple

MLS/DBMSs at different sites. We have investigated query processing as well as transaction management techniques. We have conducted simulation studies as well as prototype development. Our research is discussed in [THUR91], [THUR93], [RUBI91], [RUBI92a], [RUBI92b], [RUBI93a], and [RUBI93b].
