ABSTRACT

In this closing chapter we briefly review the status of forensic psychiatry in our society, as well as in other societies, with particular emphasis on its cultural aspects. We then make general comments about culture and the law, and we suggest how the legal system might further adapt to meet the needs of people living in a culturally diverse, contemporary society, while retaining the fundamental spirit of the law. Finally, we offer suggestions on how forensic psychiatrists can improve their cultural competence and how legal personnel can increase their cultural sensitivity. We discuss the importance of cultural sensitivity in the court system for all persons involved in legal proceedings.
