ABSTRACT

The ovaries are endocrine glands exhibiting exocrine (eggs) and endocrine functions. Their hormones (estradiol, androstendione, testosterone, progesterone and inhibin) are not necessary for maintaining life as are those of the adrenal, pancreas and thyroid glands. Ovarian function is to create life, safeguarding the procreation of humankind. To prepare a woman for this most important task, the ovarian hormones stimulate growth, differentiation and functions of the reproductive organs through puberty to maturity. Moreover, all vital important organs and physiological functions are positively influenced by estrogens, as pregnancy exerts a high demand on the whole organism.
