In this chapter I will describe how I approached and conducted the research which forms the basis of this book. The chapter is divided into three sections. The first section focuses upon ethnography, case study and educational enquiry. The second section looks in detail at how I conducted the research. This section is broken into six sub-sections which deal with access and entry; the informant; fieldwork; recording data; data analysis; writing. The third section highlights four things I have learned from conducting the research.
