ABSTRACT
The Middle Kingdom is undoubtedly one of the high points of Egyptian civilization. It was a period of four hundred years of, apparently, peace and prosperity, and of high cultural achievement. Through its literature, its people speak to us in a more direct way than those of the Old Kingdom, and the surviving administrative documents and letters permit an insight into the daily workings of palace and farm, and the tedium of service on the desert frontier.
