ABSTRACT

This book is the result of six years’ doctoral research into dramatherapy and psychodrama as psychotherapeutic interventions with people who hear voices and eighteen years’ experience as a therapist. It is based on my PhD thesis (Casson, 2002). That research, while building on the work of previous therapists and researchers, was ground-breaking because there had not been previous focused research into what people who heard voices found helpful or not helpful in dramatherapy and psychodrama. I present some of the research findings, though I do not present all the material in the thesis to ensure this book is not overly academic: readers who wish to know more can apply to the university for the thesis or to me for a copy on CDRom (email: joncassun@beeb.net). I see this book then as a starter, hoping that it will inspire other therapists and researchers to follow up the insights I have gathered, to the eventual benefit of voice hearers and the development of creative action methods in psychotherapy.
