ABSTRACT

It is also reasonably easy to compile statistics that compare the formal status of male and female staff. Differences are important here, not only because of the possibly unequal opportunities offered to male and female teachers, but also because young people need to see women (and other marginalized groups) in positions of authority and responsibility. It may also be useful to look at which curriculum and management areas have more female staff, and if it is possible, what they do in that position. Are the heads of science, PE and D&T, for example, male or female, and what are the job titles of their deputies? Is the female deputy head really of equal standing to her two male counterparts, or does she have a vague brief to do with pastoral responsibility for the girls?
