ABSTRACT

RACE (Research and Development in Advanced Communications Technologies in Europe) was a major European Com m ission initiative launched in 1987 and aimed at ensuring that the European Communities remained in the forefront of developments in the telecom m unications sector and continued to be competitive. It complemented the European Strategic Programm e for Research and Developm ent in Information Technology (ESPRIT) and other more specific inform ation technology projects; it was replaced in 1994 by ACTS.
