ABSTRACT

When we talked about essay structure in Chapter 7 we used the analogy of an architect designing a building. If the building was well structured, things would be in the right places and the building shouldn’t fall down. Continuing that analogy we could say that if the architect is responsible for designing a good structure, then the builders and decorators are responsible for ensuring that the final construction is well built. They actually cement the bricks together, plaster the walls and paint the woodwork. If the quality of workmanship at this stage is poor, then the final product will be unsatisfactory, despite the good work at the planning stage. If the builder doesn’t keep the rows of bricks perfectly level, the plasterers make the walls lumpy, and the decorators let drips set in the paintwork, the building will become the architectural equivalent of a poorly written essay.
