ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests various ways in which schools and others can further the possibilities of good citizenship and of education for good citizenship. Although there are many very difficult issues and serious obstacles to be confronted and overcome, successful teaching and learning in citizenship education can take place within our schools. It is suggested that there are positive opportunities for such work at a time when in many countries the language of citizenship is on the lips of high-status politicians and officials. In England, the context of this book, the commitment of the government in general and the publication of the Crick Report (QCA 1998) in particular, is to be noted. It is vitally important for everyone involved to seize this moment.
