This chapter prepares for the analysis of transcript data in the following three chapters. The purposes of that analysis will be to:

• infer the transactional meanings of many of the utterances in the conversations, and in particular the way that individual children structure aspects of their mathematical understanding;

• investigate how participants used and decoded language to support their contribution to a co-operative social interaction;

• consider the motives which determine the character of that contribution to that mathematical interaction.
