ABSTRACT
Pathophysiology is briefly described here, but discussion focuses on nursing interventions. Although underlying causes of these two conditions may be chronic, possibly necessitating later medical or surgical treatments, the rapidity with which these conditions can deteriorate or prove fatal means that identification and prompt and appropriate treatment can improve survival and reduce complications. Once immediate dangers to life have been removed, care and treatment increasingly focuses on causes, underlying problems, and needs.
