ABSTRACT

Some patients may be admitted to hospital with neurological problems, but others develop complications when admitted for other pathologies. Even more so than in many pathophysiologies discussed in other chapters, nursing care contributes significantly to recovery from acute neurological disease. Many problems, and so nursing care, are common to many pathologies, so this chapter starts by identifying key problems caused by brain damage, then describes acute neurological conditions seen in many wards and departments of general hospitals including:

■ Head injury ■ Epilepsy ■ Guillain-Barré syndrome ■ Spinal cord injury.
