ABSTRACT
At the end of the twentieth century, South Africa is the only country in the world that guarantees protection for gays and lesbians in its constitution. As members of one of the world’s newest democracies (1994), South Africans had the unique opportunity to negotiate a constitution that reflected the respect for the rights and dignity of all men and women, which the legislation of the previous apartheid government so painfully denied.
