Gay Asian activism is tied directly to the social protest movements of the 1960s. Even before the Stonewall riots of 1969, individual gay Asians were active in the civil rights movement. One of them, Kiyoshi Kuromiya, of Philadelphia, would later be featured in Arthur Dong’s documentary Out Rage ’69 (1995). Kuromiya eventually became an AIDS activist and edited the Critical Path AIDS Project’s newsletter. In 1996, he was a plaintiff in an ACLU lawsuit against the Communications Decency Act.
