ABSTRACT
Edward Jenner (Chapter 1, Figure 4) induced a mild disease, cowpox, to protect against a more serious infection (namely smallpox) caused by the antigenically related variola virus. Nearly a century later, Pasteur
(Figure 1) and associates used attenuated microorganisms to induce a state of protective immunity against chicken cholera.
