ABSTRACT
Microbiology Staphylococci are Gram-positive cocci that form clusters and produce the enzyme catalase. The genus consists of several species. Staphylococcus aureus (Staph, aureus), the most virulent species, produces the enzyme coagulase, whereas all the other, less virulent species, are collectively named coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS).
