Microbiology The Bacillus genus consists of numerous species, only two of which are commonly associated with disease in humans. B. anthracis causes anthrax and B. cereus causes food-poisoning. Under harsh environmental conditions, the organism forms tough and durable spores which can vegetate (i.e. revert to growth) once environmental conditions become favorable.
