Preface to the fourth edition

When this book first appeared in 1980, there seemed to be little interest in the study of translation. Indeed, the notion of an independent field, some would say discipline in its own right, focusing on the theory and practice of translation would have been viewed with astonishment in the academic world. Translator training programmes, mostly outside the English-speaking world, provided professional courses for business and industry, but translation was not a mainstream university subject and when it was taught, appeared only as an adjunct to foreign language learning.
