ABSTRACT

The cell body of a neuron contains a number of different organelles that all work towards the maintenance of the cell. Some of the more important organelles within the cell body are the nucleus, the mitochondria, which provide the cell with energy, and the ribosomes, on which proteins are produced. The axon is the output side of the neuron. Unlike the dendrites, there is usually only one axon emanating from each cell body. This single axon can also branch, but there are usually far fewer branches to the axon of a neuron than to its dendrites. The axon hillock is located where the axon leaves the cell body. It is a special place on the neuron because this is where the neuronal impulse, which will be carried along the axon, is generated. A synapse consists of the terminal bouton of one neuron, the receptor area of the next cell and the space in between them, called the synaptic cleft.
