ABSTRACT

As any two points can be connected by a straight line it follows that we can define a line in the form y = mx + c from two points on an x-y plot. If the two points are (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), then the gradient m is given by

The intercept c can then be found by substituting m, x1 and y1 into the general equation y = mx + c. This can then be rearranged in the form c = y1 − mx1, and a value for c obtained.
