The third of these assumptions requires some expansion: in the course of calculating a chi-squared, the expected frequency for each cell is calculated. If you are using software to calculate χ2, it should warn you if this restriction is broken. If your data has low or zero counts in some classes, Fisher’s exact test can be employed.
