ABSTRACT

W.H.Auden, ‘In Memory of W.B.Yeats’ (1940), pt 3. June 21, 1948 saw a transformation of Wilton Park. It no longer held prisonersof-war; it was no longer called a ‘Training Centre’; it was no longer a War Office responsibility, but ‘a detached unit of the Foreign Office, German Section’. During the period July 21, 1948 to March 31, 1949, five courses were to be held, each lasting six weeks, with an average of 60 students per course. The total expenditure for the nine months was to be £19,576. The Ministry of Works was to be responsible for accommodation, and its cost; the Ministry of Supply would provide vehicles, although these would be paid for by German Section. Koeppler was given ‘local responsibility’, but he and the academic staff were to be under German Section, and an Administration Officer was to be appointed to deal among other things with travel arrangements.
