ABSTRACT

One of the most important factors affecting ventilation effectiveness is room air distribution. This chapter discusses different mathematical models used in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation and different methods and instrumentation to measure room air distribution. Air leakage measurement and analysis and the effect of air leakage on ventilation effectiveness are also discussed in this chapter. At the end of the chapter, a case study is presented to illustrate the effect of alternative ventilation schemes on particulate matter (PM) spatial distribution in rooms. Given the multitude and variety of factors affecting ventilation effectiveness, this chapter intends to provide the reader with a broad perspective on ventilation effectiveness. In that regard, much of the analysis in this chapter is qualitative rather than quantitative.
