ABSTRACT
Local law enforcement officers who believe the punishment for a state drug crime will have little or no impact on a particular trafficker can approach the U.S. Attorney’s Office in their area either directly or through the DEA and seek federal prosecution. When the defendant learns he is liable for substantially more severe punishment for the same offense, he may be more inclined to cooperate.
