ABSTRACT

The 30th Assembly District is a typically gerrymandered legislative district. With most of east Bakersfield and cities like Arvin, Lamont, Delano, Shafter, Wasco, McFarland, the population is both heavily Latino and Democratic. Kern County is 47.1 percent Latino, a plurality in the county. Clearly, the 30th District needs dramatic voter registration drives, citizenship efforts and political education in the broadest sense. The candidates should have a sense of missionary zeal, which would lead them to hit the streets in efforts to get people, especially Latinos, to become registered voters so that they can determine their own political destinies. 2
