Bread wheat, Triticum aestivum L. (2n=6x=42; AABBDD genomes), is the most widely grown cereal crop, occupying 17% of the cultivated area worldwide, and is a staple for 15% of the world’s population (https://www.CIMMYT.org/). With an annual production of over 570 million metric tons, wheat leads all other crops in terms of seed planted and acreage harvested (FAO 2001). By 2020, it is expected that the demand for wheat will be 40% greater than its current level; however, the resources for wheat production are likely to be significantly lower (Pingali and Rajaram 1999).
