ABSTRACT

Time is not what it is.1 It turns, and by its very concept is susceptible to revolution. Negativity is its turning point (Wendungspunkt).

Christianity brings about time’s great ‘volte face’: ‘This new principle is the axis (Die Angel) around which the history of the world turns.’2

Christianity is not one moment among many but the pivot which brings all into motion, as we can see from the old distinction ante natum, post natum. ‘History ends from that point (bis hierher) and begins from that point (von daher geht).’3
