ABSTRACT

Advances in microelectronic mechanical systems (MEMS) and wireless communication technologies, and the availability of sophisticated sensor-signal processing algorithms have enabled production of multifunctional and small-sized sensor nodes [25, 29]. Due to their compactness and low cost, wireless sensors can be embedded and distributed at a fraction of the cost of conventional wired sensors. A wide range of tasks can be performed by these tiny devices, such as remote object monitoring and tracking; detection of the presence or absence of certain elements; and condition-based maintenance, among other special applications.
