ABSTRACT

When analyzing the risks that can be incurred during the laboratory procedures in in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatments, three different levels can be distinguished, leading to first-, second-and thirdorder risks. First-order risks are related to the quality system of an assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratory; second-order risks are related to the state of the art of ART and third-order risks are related to ART laboratory procedures affecting gametes, embryos and as a consequence the quality of life of the children.
