ABSTRACT

Since the treatment of infertility represents nonvital care offered to young and healthy patients, avoiding major somatic complications of in vitro fertilization (IVF) or non-IVF procedures remains an important challenge for the physicians involved in their management. Among these complications, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is one of the most severe. Although fortunately rare, it entails potentially serious or even life-threatening medical damage. OHSS is not frequent, its pathophysiology remains unclear and there are few criteria of reliable predictive value for its occurrence. For these reasons, its prevention remains an unresolved problem for reproductive specialists, who are without a sufficient scientific or clinical basis to develop methods to guarantee complete safety.
