Figure 1 Outer wall of the anterior descending coronary artery at its origin at the left main coronary artery bifurcation. (The outer wall lies opposite the flow divider of the bifurcation.) Thickening in the outer wall is in response to flow characteristics at this location and results from adaptations in the intima. This microscopic section shows the average degree of such adaptive thickening at this age.
