ABSTRACT

This chapter documents the author's involvement with Tony, a young man with aphasia, over a 5-year period. I describe two key phases of therapy: the first, when Tony and I worked together in a neuro-rehabilitation centre, approximately 9 to 12 months after his stroke; the second, when I supervised Tony's therapy programme at a university-based aphasia centre between 3 and 5 years after his stroke. The chapter describes the therapeutic content and direction of these two periods of intervention and the changes and outcomes that ensued. These outcomes will be described from the perspective of the treating therapist (and student clinicians) and from the viewpoint of Tony himself. Tony's reflections on therapy and change have been extracted from in-depth interviews conducted with him at 21/2 and 5 years into his journey as a person living with aphasia. The reflections of a succession of student therapists are taken from their clinical notes.
