ABSTRACT

White stereotypes that problematize and denigrate African Americans often lead to discriminatory actions. In this chapter and the next, we examine an array of specific discriminatory barriers as these AfricanAmerican law enforcement officers regularly experience them. The various forms of blatant, subtle, and covert discrimination in the workplace reflect and reinforce the persisting racial hierarchy common in historically white institutions. Although in recent decades some societal and institutional changes have permitted some advancement for many African Americans, most still encounter significant racial barriers that indicate that they are stereotyped and unwanted by many whites in both historically white workplaces and other important societal settings.1
