Spreading Deserts

Among the environmental concerns that have occupied scientists, the public, and the media in recent years, what is loosely-though somewhat misleadingly-termed the problem of spreading deserts and more correctly called desertification has often taken a back seat. Unlike such headline-grabbing issues as global warming, nuclear waste, and pollution, which are generally considered to be of global importance, desertification affects mostly the poor and poorer countries. As with these other issues, though, scientists hotly debate the extent and relative seriousness of desertification.
