CUBA’S WORLD CHANGED in 1991 with the Soviet Union’s demise. At the time, trade accounted for about half the island’s gross national product, with the Soviet bloc accounting for 85 percent of that trade. Under the circumstances, the economy, as noted in chapter 4, immediately contracted by more than 30 percent.2
