ABSTRACT

This is the fi rst of two chapters which focus on the bottom right of the grammar, in the statements about culture domain. Whereas historical narratives, in Chapter 6, are part of the driving force for how we construct culture, derived from global position and politics, discourses are under the heading of particular cultural products. This chapter therefore explores discourses of culture as things that we construct in order to make sense of culture, but which then take on a life of their own and can easily begin to dominate what we think is real about culture.
