ABSTRACT

The music of Louis Spohr (1784-1859) and Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) has many common stylistic features. Both composers had a predilection felr lyricism, melodic and harmonic chromaticism, brilliant passagework, and colorful instrumentation. They also shared with other contemporaries a liking for certain melodic gestures and t(X stock rhythmic patterns such as those of the polacca and bolero. Both were virtuoso performers, Spohr on the violin and Weber on the piano, and each composed much for his own instrument. Yet their chamber music outputs are very different in profile and content.
