ABSTRACT

As noted in Chapter 4 (“ClassiÞcation of Toxins in Humans”), chemicals and drugs can be categorized, in part, according to their toxic effects. Prediction of toxicity of a chemical lies in the ability to understand its potential effects based on factors not necessarily related to physicochemical properties. This chapter explores a variety of local and systemic reactions elicited by chemical exposure and the physiological and immunological basis of those effects.
