ABSTRACT

Monster inhaled and swallowed Coyote. As the nineteenth century progressed, Nez Perce and other Plateau Indian communities came under greater pressure from Anglo Americans interested in obtaining their land and confining them to the reservations set up through the treaty of 1855. Just like Monster, Anglo Americans wished to “consume” the Nez Perce, not only physically, but also in a larger manner. The swallowing of the Nez Perce was an act designed to make them “disappear” from the Columbia Plateau. Anglo Americans on the Columbia Plateau wanted to relegate Indians to reservations, destroy their culture and recreate Indians in their own image. If Indians failed to accept these conditions, like the non-treaty Nez Perce, then Anglo Americans used military force to destroy their resistance.
