Revolutionary Martyrs: Good versus Evil Again

With the victory of Constantine, the age of the martyrs ended. For many, Constantine’s 313 Edict of Toleration allowing Christians freedom to worship lifted the fear of persecution that had shrouded the Christian congregations like a deep fog. Constantine’s historian Eusebius captured the joy that accompanied the lifting of that oppressive fog:

Men had now lost all fear of their former oppressors; day after day they kept dazzling festival; light was everywhere, and men who once dared not look up greeted each other with smiling faces and shining eye. They danced and sang in city and country alike….1
