Soon, a stream of American directives began the liberalisation of all aspects of Japanese society. This brisk, energetic action was hardly surprising for American preparations had been long and extremely detailed. As early as the summer of 1942 training for the military government of Japan had been inaugurated and in the following year America’s most distinguished universities had undertaken the training of hundreds of servicemen in many aspects of Japanese language and culture.
