ABSTRACT
Annie Chapman’s body was found at about 6 a.m. on 31 August 1888, at the back of a cheap lodging house at 29, Hanbury Street, Whitechapel. It was one of the 17 lodgers, an elderly man by the name of John Davis, who made the gruesome discovery. He came downstairs as the church clock was striking six o’clock in the morning, opened the yard door and saw the body. The police report described her as
lying on her back, dead, left arm resting on left breast, legs drawn up, abducted, small intestines and flap of the abdomen lying in a large quantity of blood above the left shoulder; throat cut deeply from left and back in jagged manner right around the throat.1
