ABSTRACT

PETER DERRICK SAMMAN was born in 1914 in the beautiful Indian hill station of Darjeeling. After his father retired in 1914 as Commissioner in the Indian Civil Service, the family of seven children moved to the Isle of Man. Peter was educated at King Williams College. He had begun his clinical training in Medicine at King’s College Hospital when World War II broke out. As a volunteer in the Royal Air Force he rose to the rank of Squadron Leader. After discharge he went on to get his MRCP in 1946. Further training in dermatology at King’s and a stint at Bristol led to his appointment to the staff of St. John’s Hospital where he remained for his academic lifetime, with his private practice being conducted at his home. His research skills were honed by a sabbatical at the University of Pennsylvania in 1958.
