ABSTRACT

MARIE GUILLAUME ALPHONSE DEVERGIE was born February 15, 1798, in Paris, son of a humble hospital employee. He took an early interest in medicine, attended Dupuytren’s Clinics, even at the age of 15, and received his degree in 1823, entitling his thesis, An Essay on the Exploration of the Abdomen by the Aid of the Sight and Touch, Considered as to Its Connection with Diagnosis of the Diseases which Belong to Internal Pathology. At the age of 29 he became physician to l’Hôpital Saint Louis, and in 1841 became Chief there, succeeding Biett.
