ABSTRACT

LOUIS ALBERT BRUNSTING was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 7, 1900. He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan and his dermatologic training at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He joined the staff of the Mayo Clinic in 1930 and remained associated with that institution for the next 35 years. By 1953 he was Chief of the Section of Dermatology, a position he held until his retirement in 1962. His remarkable clinical acumen manifested itself early. While still a resident, he observed and linked together five cases of chronic ulceration to create a “new” dermatologic entity, pyoderma gangrenosum. His creation, noted below, has stood the test of time.
