ABSTRACT

FRIEDERICH WEGENER, noted German pathologist, was born in Veral, Oldenburg 7 April 1907. Son of a well-known physician, he studied medicine in Munich and Kiel and graduated as M.D. in 1932. In 1935 he accepted a teaching position in Breslau and during this period published his minutely detailed classic 1939 report on “Wegener’s granulomatosis.” He himself never used that eponymic term, but the condition is so firmly associated with its describer that it appears to have no other official name. Case 2 from the report, shown below, displays the key elements associated with the disease.
