FROM APPROXIMATELY THE FIRST CRUSADE TO THE PERIOD OF INITIAL exploration of the Atlantic frontier, medieval Christian Europe saw the development and reification of a protocolonialist ideology associated first with eastward and then with westward expansion, and marked by a concurrent interest in what Peter Hulme, using the type of corporeal metaphors I examine in this project, calls “the purging of heretics and pagans from within the body of Christendom.”1
